Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is a leading establishment of higher education in Ukraine since 1834

Today Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is a classic research-based university, the main scientific and educational center of Ukraine. Since the development of the independent Ukraine, the university is facing new responsibilities and challenges. The future experts should possess the profound professional knowledge and creative thinking, along with being conscious of the great responsibility for the work and the ability to be a driving force in the working field. Only the university with long-lasting history of achievements and successful work in both teaching field and in scientific field could deal with such a mission. On April 21, 1994, the university got the status of “National” by decree №176/94 of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk; and on November 25, 1999, according to a new decree of Leonid Kuchma, the President of Ukraine, the autonomous status of the university was greatly expanded. On May 5, 2008, Viktor Yushchenko, the President of Ukraine at that time, issued a new decree №412/2008, and by that the university was determined to take a course on converting into the main educational and scientific center of Ukraine in educating academic and teaching staff of higher qualification. On July 29, 2009, according to the regulation of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the university was granted the status of self-governing (autonomous) national research establishment of higher education, besides, the intense funding of the university’s future development programs is also provided.

The high status of the classical research-based university is proved by numerous academic achievements of its scholars – academic staff, who are granted particularly with the State Prizes of Ukraine in the field of science and technology, awards of the NAS of Ukraine and individual national academies of sciences, Orders of Merit, Orders of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the honorary titles of Honored Educational Worker of Ukraine, Honored Lawyer of Ukraine, Prizes of the President of Ukraine for young scientists, Premiums of the Ukrainian Parliament for the most talented young scientists in the field of basic and applied research and scientific and technical development.

Among the university units there are 13 Faculties (Geography, Economics, History, Information Technology, Computer Science and Cybernetics, Mechanics and Mathematics, Sociology, Psychology, Radio Physics, Electronics and Computer Systems, Physics, Philosophy, Chemistry), 8 Institutes (Military, High Technologies, Journalism, International Relations, Continuing Education, Philology, Management State Guard of Ukraine, Law), 1 Educational and Scientific Institute (Institute of Geology), 1 Educational and Scientific Center (Biology and Medicine), 2 Professional Pre-Higher Education Institutions (College of Geological-Exploration Technologies and Optical-Mechanical College), Ukrainian Physical and Mathematical Lyceum, Preparatory Department, Center of Ukrainian Studies, Geology and Zoology Museums, Museum of University History, Interfaculty Museum of Linguistics, Information and Computing Center, Astronomical Observatory, Publishing and Polygraphic Centre “The University of Kyiv”, Maksymovich Scientific Library.

A campus with comfortable dormitories, computer clubs, sport centers, canteens, cafes, dancing studios has been built for the student accommodation.

The University of Kyiv maintains extensive international relations with universities from all around the world. Today the university has 384 partnership agreements with universities and other establishments from 69 countries all over the world.

There are 35 centers, mainly created together with foreign establishments (have joint projects), especially in Institute of Philology – 20, Institute of Law – 9, Institute of International Relations – 3, also Faculties of History, Geography, Economics have 1 center each.

They promote international cooperation, acquaintance with new scientific, methodological and fiction literature, publishing, organization of language courses, meetings of students and academic staff with famous modern figures of culture and science, attending cultural events, career guidance.

134 foreign scientists and professors from 23 countries (Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Greece, Spain, China, Germany, USA, France, Sweden etc.) have visited the university in order to conduct a scientific cooperation, participate in conferences, give lectures for short time.

University is working hard in order to increase the number of international students enrolled. The number of foreign citizens getting their education in the university is 1813 students. The development of English teaching training programs caused the number of international students to grow.
